国标麻豆视频APP student exemplifies full liberal arts and sciences experience

by Matt Overing

Anne Exterkamp, a German major with a minor in biology, draws on the 国标麻豆视频APP campus.

At 国标麻豆视频APP, students take advantage of the full liberal arts and sciences experience to pursue their passions, build their resume and prepare for an array of career opportunities.

Anne Exterkamp 鈥26 is one student who has jumped headfirst into what 国标麻豆视频APP has to offer. The Fort Thomas, Kentucky, native knew in choosing a college that she wanted a personal advising experience 鈥 one that took each of her interests to heart.

鈥淚 knew I wanted to explore all kinds of different fields of interest 鈥 biology, art, German 鈥 and I thought it would be hard at a big school,鈥 she said. 鈥湽曷槎故悠礎PP has helped me create that path.鈥

Exterkamp noted she has always wanted to be a doctor, and with German roots, the language felt like a natural choice. Those programs don鈥檛 have much overlap in course requirements, and the additional art interest for electives made things more complicated, but Exterkamp liked the challenge.

鈥淢y advisors in both (German and biology) had to communicate and just talk about what the best track was,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought that was really cool, bringing those departments together.

鈥淚 started to enjoy the differences, because, with German, a lot of our exams would be in German. In art, we鈥檇 have projects. STEM classes would be physical exams. I like how it doesn鈥檛 feel just like an overload of just one type of test. I felt like working different parts of my brain.鈥

Part of what makes Exterkamp a memorable student is her 鈥渇earlessness,鈥 Dowling Associate Professor of Biology Kelly O鈥橯uin said.

鈥淪he was enrolling in challenging sophomore-level courses straight away in her first semester,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he is incredibly hard-working, regularly visiting office hours to work through difficult concepts. Anne is relentlessly positive. Even when challenged, she seems to know that she will figure it out eventually, and that confidence can be infectious, even for me.鈥

Exterkamp鈥檚 involvement outside of coursework embodied that relentless effort, first as a cheerleader and then moving to a team manager role with the men鈥檚 soccer team. Over the summer, she shadowed an OBGYN 鈥 a potential career choice, but currently she鈥檚 leaving options open. She鈥檒l study abroad in Germany in the spring and plans to intern at a women鈥檚 health clinic there.

Throughout her 国标麻豆视频APP experience, Exterkamp has followed her passions. She admitted it was foggy at first, but now as an upperclassman, the picture of her future is coming into focus.

鈥淚 started by picking classes that I was interested in and just took it from there,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I would say, don't feel the pressure to conform to one major 鈥 I think it is incredibly beneficial to put yourself in situations where you're around different groups of people and different perspectives.鈥
